The 'Communication for Action' bid started in April 2009 and will run to March 2011. The aim of the project is to improve networks and communication infrastructure in order to help maximise the social change potential of social enterprise in the South East.

The project has been restructured from the initial proposal because of a £76K reduction in budget and time frame from Capacitybuilders. We appointed a consultant to carry out some research into the current peer to peer programmes and related activity and best practice.

From this it was decided that the project would take a different approach; rather than commission a pilot study with one network and bring in an outside agency to run the project; we decided to put more money into the networks for delivery; run 4 schemes to April 2010 and then build on this to reach more networks.

The first phase is now being rolled out in: Berkshire; Kent; Milton Keynes and Surrey. Training has been commissioned to train facilitators in these areas to ensure that the capacity to run the peer to peer action learning sets is developed from the grass roots.

The project has 4 target outcomes:

• A sustainable infrastructure in place that better enables front line social entrepreneurs to provide effective support to other established, new or fledgling social entrepreneurs
• A sustainable infrastructure in place that more effectively enables successful social enterprises to grow through replication.
• A network of networks that more effectively enables social enterprises and entrepreneurs to access consistent and high quality resources, knowledge and support.
• A sustainable information, communications and promotional programme.

Although they are all interlinked, outcome three is most specifically about sub regional networks :

Overall Activities

• Co –ordination and delivery of peer to peer support activities, including opportunities for 1;1 peer coaching/mentoring activities
• Development of case studies and development work with growth ready businesses
• Network meetings with creative workshops
• Ongoing management and delivery of the communication programme  

'Communication for Action' will be the link between the SEASON and BETTER Capacitybuilders projects by supporting the ongoing development of the new networks established through SEASON and BETTER.
